Portrait of a City ~ Leipzig : Leipzig has always been a trade city, situated during the time of the Holy Roman Empire at the intersection of the Via Regia and Via Imperii, two important trade routes. At one time, Leipzig was one of the major European centres of learning and culture in fields such as music and publishing. After World War II, Leipzig became a major urban centre within the Communist German Democratic Republic but its cultural and economic importance declined.[ Leipzig later played a significant role in instigating the fall of communism in Eastern Europe, through events which took place in and around St. Nicholas Church. Since the reunification of Germany, Leipzig has undergone significant change with the restoration of some historical buildings, the demolition of others, and the development of a modern transport infrastructure. Leipzig has many institutions and opportunities for culture and recreation including a football stadium which has hosted some international matches, an opera house and one of the most modern zoos in Europe. In 2010, Leipzig was ranked 68th in the world as a livable city, by consulting firm Mercer in their quality of life survey. Sie trommeln z.B. auf Mülleimern, Fässern oder spielen "Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht" auf einer Motorsäge, dazu gibt es einen Funkenstrahl im Rhythmus mit dem Winkelschleifer an der Blechtrommel. Die Rede ist von drei wilden Trommlern aus Berlin. Sie bringen ein wahres Feuerwerk an Ideen, Akrobatik und schrägen Melodien auf die Bühne. Ihre Musik ist eine Mischung aus wilder Trommelei im aktuellen Sound und eingängigen Melodien. Zur Crew gehören Sven Hertrampf, Basti Reznicek und Matze Mantzke, alles erfahrene Musiker aus der Berliner Szene. Das 1997 durch Sven Hertrampf ins Leben gerufene Projekt tourt seit dem durchs gesamte Bundesgebiet und Europa und begeisterte unzählige Gäste auf Konzerten, Galas und Radioshows. In 1998 he founded the LeipJAZZig-Orkester which is now one of the most renowned ensembles of its kind in Germany. In 2007, the Chamber Orchestra "artentfaltung" due to him in life. He was also a founder of the YouTube Jazz Orchestra. He is a board member in Leipzig eV jazz musicians and jazz cosmos eV. King previously worked with various artists such as Harald Juhnke , Nigel Kennedy , Richard Galliano , Konstanze Lauterbach , Rüdiger Evers together. Seit demselben Jahr hat er eine Lehrtätigkeit an der Hochschule inne (Fächer: Klavier, Improvisation, Arrangement und Jazz-Chor). 1986 war er Gründungsmitglied des Jazz-Theaters Leipzig, dessen musikalischer Leiter er zwei Jahre lang war. 1998 gründete er das LeipJAZZig-Orkester, das mittlerweile zu den renommiertesten Ensembles seiner Art Deutschlands zählt. 2007 wurde das Kammerorchester „artentfaltung“ durch ihn ins Leben gerufen. Daneben war er Gründer des YouTube-JazzOrchestras. Er ist Vorstandsmitglied der Initiative Leipziger Jazzmusiker e.V. und des JazzKosmos e.V.. König arbeitete bislang mit zahlreichen Künstlern wie Harald Juhnke, Nigel Kennedy, Richard Galliano, Konstanze Lauterbach, Rüdiger Evers zusammen. Olbricht-Kaserne/Abandon Red Army Military Base, Germany : Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, East and West Germany merged territories. More than twenty years later, some structures built before and during the East German occupation are still standing. Such was the case with the former Red Army base (Olbricht-Kaserne).The barracks were built in 1895, they include a train battalion from the 19th century as the Imperial Army was responsible for supply and management of goods. After 1918, the army was stationed here and in 1935, the Nazis, During their reign the warehouses were extended by two reinforced concrete buildings until the end of the second World War when control of the base (along with East Germany) was handed to the Soviet Union's Western Group of Forces of the Soviet Army (WGT), in 1945. I have read that the high walls did not retain noise levels, they resounded so far and wide the base became known by the colloquial name "factory engine." Sadly, the base is falling into ruin. Vacant since the early 1990's, facades have either been painted over eroded away. One cannot overlook the historic chasm that opens when restoration is considered. Rather the city of Leipzig wrestle with the past, the base is in the process of being demolished. Its steel parts are to be melted down and resurrected as something new.

Zeitz, Germany : It is believed the origins of Zeitz dates back to the year 979. Like most villages in this region, it was a Slav settlement before changing hands after the outcome of various battles including the Battle of the Nations in 1815. Napoleon lost his quest to rule the world as well as parts of Saxony (part of which had sided with him) to Prussia. More than the exchange of leaders, for over 600 years Zeitz had been the desired place of residence bishops, including Julius von Pflug -- who upon dying in 1564 left open a chance for new rulers. In 1657 Moritz, the youngest son of the elector Johann Georg I., took possession of his share of the inheritance and became duke of the newly created duchy Sachsen-Zeitz. He made his mark, his Baroque-style "Moritzburg Castle" was used as residence for following dukes until the year 1718. Post Battle of the Nations the industrial revolution shaped Zeitz into a bustling Prussian city. It produced numerous goods including baby prams, pianos and various machinery. The golden years came to an abrupt end. Stalinist Rule following World War II paralyzed the passage of time. Many of the village's buildings are weathered by a mixture of natural elements, coal soot and time's passage. Ironically walking through Zeitz, one does not have to work hard to image that it is the 1950's. Still, it should be pointed out that time travel around Zeitz should not be limited to a few decades ago. The city's past extends back for over 1000 years, which means there are a lot of centuries to choose from.

PEGAU, GERMANY : It has been bought and sold, burned to the ground (twice), and bombed by the United States during WWII. Its visitors include BACH and NAPOLEON, among others. In its heyday Pegau was is one of Germany's earliest established villages. It served as a major trade route for nearly a century. In sharp contrast, Pegau is now mostly an unassuming, small agricultural village located just on the outskirts of Leipzig. Arriving there is like taking a visual tour back in time, but it's not always clear to what century. The village is speckled with history. Its origins trace back to two things: a waterway and religious establishment. Land surrounding the village is continuously kept fertile by the scenic nearby Weiße Elster. Some of the village's homes were built in the 1600's, but the village dates back to the Middle Ages, when around the year 1100 a Benedictine monastery was established from which a Slavic village grew before being colonized by Germanic growth. Also resulting from the rich farm land along with its ideal location, along a main road linking the east to the west, during the 16th & 17th centuries Pegau was known as a major national market place. Erfurt, Germany : Erfurt (German pronunciation: [ˈɛʁfʊʁt][2]) is the capital city of Thuringia and the main city nearest to the geographical centre of Germany, located 100 km SW of Leipzig, 150 km N of Nuremberg and 180 km SE of Hannover. Together with the neighbour-cities Weimar and Jena it forms the central metropolitan area of Thuringia with approximately 500,000 inhabitants. Notable institutions in Erfurt are the Federal Labour Court of Germany, the University of Erfurt and the Fachhochschule Erfurt as well as the Roman Catholic Diocese of Erfurt with the Erfurt Cathedral as one of the main sights. Further famous buildings are the Krämerbrücke, a bridge completely covered with dwellings, and the oldest Synagogue still standing in Europe, established in 11th century. Brantôme, France : ~ Brantome, France ~ The commune started to develop on an island encircled by a sweep of the river Dronne next to the Benedictine Abbey of Brantôme, which was founded in 769 by Charlemagne; according to legend he donated relics of Saint Sicarius (Sicaire), one of the infants in the Massacre of the Innocents. Those relics attracted pilgrims to the abbey, who also brought a certain affluence to Brantôme, but in spite of St. Sicaire's protection, the abbey was laid waste in 848 and in 857 by Viking rovers who had advanced along the Dordogne and Isle rivers to the Dronne. The abbey was rebuilt towards the end of the tenth century and again in 1465 and in 1480 after the end of the Hundred Years' War. Its Romanesque bell-tower is a competitor for the title "oldest in France"[1] and developed a high reputation. Here Bertrand du Guesclin, battling the English Angevins, apprised that he had been made Constable of France by Charles V. Pierre de Mareuil, abbot from 1538–56, built a right-angled bridge, the Pont Coudé, over the river, which connected the elegant Renaissance abbot's lodging he built for himself with its garden, which lay on the opposite bank. He was succeeded by his nephew, Pierre de Bourdeille (abbot from 1558–1614), a soldier and writer better known by his title as Abbé Brantôme, whose diplomacy saved the abbey and its commune from the Huguenot forces of Gaspard de Coligny on two occasions in 1569 during the Wars of Religion. At the French Revolution, the abbey was secularised as a bien national, the last seven monks pensioned and its rich library dispersed. " Ainsi le sort en fut jeté et la belle vous accueille encore aujourd'hui. The legend of the name, Brantome....Is amazing. It begins long ago and it involves people were called, Celts. The young city nestled in the hill and caressed by a quiet river looked for its name. Her small community was growing day by day as life was gentle around the fountain and its extraordinary source venerated out of the rock. The lord of the council of elders meets to find a name for the measurement of this earthly paradise where reigned peace and harmony. Overnight minds phosphorèrent but nothing came of concrete. In the morning the Lord decided to appeal to heaven and his sword to the sparkling azure saying the magic words. Corner of mist then faded to be replaced by a fairy of great beauty. Lord and sages before the onset knelt and the fairy said, "Beloved, this city that you created should have a name worthy of eternity, the water and the rock I called you BRANTOME and I tell you, take good care." Chambon-sur Voueize : Chambon-sur Voueize is drowning in the heavy layers of the setting sun. It is mid October, a cold snap has been gripping much of Europe for over the past week during which time I have been traveling the back roads of France and avoiding any and all invitations to spend a night camping -- it was cold. There are times in life when one basks in certainty because what reality life offers outdoes anything imaginary. This is how I came to discover the village of Chambon-sur Voueize. It was a purposeful, divine accident. A road map, after all, serves only one purpose: to show us where we are, not where we are going. This may explain why people do not often stumbled upon Chambon. They used to. In the 9th century people made pilgrimages there to visit the abbey, St. Valerie, which dates back to the Gallo-Romans who, after discovering the emerald green valley, built a monastery from which the village slowly grew into what is today where the village continues to quietly sits at the valley basin. It is a picturesque scene visually familiar to us from 16th century paintings, which is why we should visit it.

Bergerac, France : Bergerac offers some of the finest wines in the Bordeaux region. The drainage is excellent as a result of its proximity to the Dordogne River. The town has an important tourist industry and features a tobacco museum, in which, unlike in all the other museums, no smoking is allowed. The town contains two statues of Cyrano de Bergerac, subject of a famous play of the same name by Edmond Rostand, though the actual Cyrano never lived in Bergerac. An old stone statue stands on Place de la Myrpe, facing Place du Docteur Cayla. A newer statue, unusual in that it is painted in colour and stands on a stainless steel pedestal, has been erected on Place Pelissiere.
