Located at the very tip of Cape Cod, Provincetown is a beacon of early American history. The Mayflower Compact was signed there in 1620. Near the turn of the century in the 1800's artist and writers from NCY's Greenwich village settled in the village after gale force winds destroyed the fishing industry. Playwriters, such as Tennessee Williams, Eugene O'Neill, and Susan Glaspell settled there for various durations of time. As did international journalists Mary Heaton Vorse, John Reed, and Louise Bryant. And of course visual artists: Jackson Pollock, Charles Hawthorne, Edwin Dickinson, Marsden Hartley, Robert Motherwell, Hans Hofmann, Franz Kline, Willem de Kooning, Henry Hensche, George Morrison, Herman Maril, Max Bohm, and Anne Packard.
